  • Detailed Info about bowl

This large bowl was turned from a wild cherry log that came from a tree near St Paul, MN. The tree was taken down due to its closeness to a house. The log was about 15” in diameter and mostly straight grained. The shape of the bowl comes from the natural curvature of the log. The bowl is round although it appears to be oval. This optical illusion is due to the height difference of the sides. The bark is jagged, dark red in color, and shows good contrast to the lighter cambium layer. The grain of the wood is beautiful showing circular growth lines that range in color from red to brown. The colors and patterns are very nice. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 400 grit. Bowls that are turned green usually warp a little during the drying process. This is a natural process and adds beauty to a bowl. I always re-turn the bottom of a bowl after drying, so it sits properly. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each. This finish is considered food safe so the bowl can be be used for holding food, however, the bark edge makes it best for use as an artistic piece. Wild cherry wood will darken with age giving it a rich red-brown patina. You can spruce up this bowl by buffing it with a soft cloth moistened with walnut oil, but this is seldom needed. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This bark edged bowl nicely shows the beauty of cherry wood with its bark. It has an elegance that makes it stand out among similar bark edged bowls.
