Turning a Large Black Ash Burl
The following images show a large black ash burl I just acquired on a nearby Indian Reservation. This is one of many black ash burls I purchased. The burl was about 20" in diameter and nicely shaped. I cut it perpendicular to the log with a chain saw to give two pieces that showed a nice figuring and ready for end grain turning. There are several shots of one of the pieces mounted on my Vega 2400 lathe. My goal was to turn the bowl to have a complete bark edge. The burl wrapped around 80% of the circumference of the log so this seemed the best way to turn this burl. Images of the evolving bowl are shown. I will add more images of the other half of the burl soon.
